Project Palagaan, funded by the University Grants Commission under Cultural Resources and Social Sceinces scheme of the Universities with Potential for Excellence (Phase II) programme, began in the year 2012. Since then, it has successfully surveyed 49 out of 51 blocks in the two districts of North and South 24 Parganas, interviewed approximately 1500 people and collected 61 pala manuscripts. Additionally, two national level seminars have been organized, each featuring several traditional performances and there has been one workshop in collaboration with Noutanki, a Kolkata based leading theatre group. The project aspires to finish the survey of all the blocks to seek out more performers and maintain a complete record of them. The aim of the project is to preserve the endangered traditional performance of palagaan and make it available to a larger group of people, in a comprehensive manner.
